I want to introduce you all to this strong vibrant beautiful lady- Miss Pat!
She has recently gone through some big life changes, good and sadly not so good- she lost over 120 pounds, which is a huge feat, especially at age 70.
But then was unfortunately diagnosed with bone cancer.. With all that she’s also a grandmother and great grandmother and wanted to leave something as a legacy type thing for her family.
She thought about doing the bucket list type stuff, Disneyland with the kids, trips to the ocean, camping and really soaking up time with her loved ones. Which she is doing and loving every minute of it!
However she wanted something a bit more tangible to leave behind. And also something that she would benefit from as well. She decided that a boudoir session was the way to go.
As many women know a boudoir session is an intimate occasion and can be a tad intimidating.. But that didn’t stop her from reaching out to local photographers to achieve her dream.
I was honored to be picked to help her bring this dream to reality! Much like the Little Blessings photo sessions I do for terminally ill NICU babies, this sessions was something I just had to do.
I wanted and needed to honor this woman’s lovely life and tenacious spirit!
And let me tell you she did not disappoint!!

I love capturing everything that is happening, especially those candid shots.
I generally go for a journalistic and candid type portrait,
but I also incorporate the posed, looking straight in to the camera portraits as well.
Also don't forget about all the beautiful details you have on your big day.
They will of course be captured for you to cherish forever!

As photographers we have to communicate with our clients exactly what should be expected.
Clear expectations and communication are key for everyone to be satisfied!
I mean that makes sense right..? Just like in life :) Communication is key!
The terms “editing” and “retouching”
are often used interchangeably in the photography world..
Some people consider editing one thing and retouching a whole different technique.
While others use the two words to mean the same thing.
So in this post I will explain and give visual examples of what I consider editing vs. retouching

EDITING:
In my business, I edit virtually every image I take during a session.
Edits can be quick little adjustments to color, exposure, highlights and shadows;
but can also include more time consuming things like cropping and centering subjects.

Before any of this happens, photographers generally cull their image sets.
Culling is a process meaning to go through a collection of images & select those that are best.
For example:
The whole family is beautiful and looking directly at the camera, all except mom who is moving and still posing herself.. Cull that image out, because chances are there is an equally beautiful image with everyone looking directly at the camera.
That’s culling!

Once a collection of images has been culled, small edits begin to happen.
When the edits have been finished, the collection is then shared with the client.
The edited gallery is then culled again by the client, by them picking their favorite images.
Their favorite images will then be retouched.

Fun fact:
My last name is Culler. I have been told that the context of the surname is that historically our family would be responsible for culling stock for desired or undesired characteristics.

RETOUCHING:
In my workflow, retouching means smoothing of the skin and hair, whitening of teeth and eyes, minor to extensive fixes to clothes or folds and even removing objects from the image.
As you can imagine, the retouching is a bit more extensive and time consuming.
But so worth it to have a professional finished look!

Fun Fact:
I once photographed an entire family portrait with one son who was not able to make it.
I photographed that son an entirely different day, and I was able to do some retouching magic, by adding him to the entire family portrait.

In the end, each photographer has their own way of determining what they do and don’t do to your images. But now that you have a bit of knowledge as to what they might mean, hopefully you get everything you want from your portrait session.

I get my inspiration from many places..
But when it comes to boudoir portraits my story is a bit more fun and includes first
seeing these types of images through the vintage lens of some 1960's magazines.
When I moved into my current house, there was an old box hidden in the shed containing timeless Playboy magazines.
Clearly hidden from view, and I had an inkling as to why. Oh how the times have changed ;)
Regardless I fell in love with the colorful, subtle notion of sexuality!
Being so inspired, I decided to give these beautiful magazines and models a whole new life.
They are now beautifully framed and proudly displayed in my office, encouraging me as I write this blog post :)
I wanted to share a little bit about what a boudoir session is and why I love to do boudoir sessions!
Here's a little known fact that may surprise you:
Photography featuring women in their boudoirs (French for bedroom) has been a thing for nearly 100 years.
Yep! Before quick film development, before digital cameras, before women could vote and get this: before it was even legal.
And for this reason, Jessie Rose Photos sees each and every boudoir session as a rite of passage!
There can be so much creativity in every session.
We talk through what your comfortable with and what you hope to get out of your session;
whether that be some self appreciation, a gift for a special someone, or maybe to memorialize a certain point in your life.
I promise you, you will be blown away after seeing all the beauty and empowerment you have with in yourself!
First we will work to set the scene-
in a bedroom, at an upscale hotel room, out in the snow,
upon a rock in the river, you name it we can probably make it happen!
We start by talking through outfit ideas, reviewing any inspiration images and sharing studio set ups you might like.
With all that in mind we set your dream into motion!
The day of your session, your nerves might be going rampant. "What am I doing? What was I thinking? What did I agree to.."
All valid thoughts, but with all of our talks before you'll know what to expect and trust me once you get started you'll forget why you were even nervous.
If you are still feeling a little apprehensive, that's completely understandable.
But nothing a little dance party to upbeat fun music or a glass of your favorite wine can't help ;)

Here we are, first day of September.... Where did 2020 go y'all???
My glass is half full and I have been taking the opportunity to take pictures of things around me, as well those closest to me...
In this case my model was my husband, Cole! He's always a trooper and deals with my insistent need to take portraits!
This image was taken in a moment when he was trying to be a 'punk' and do what he thought would look 'ridiculous'...
Little did he know, I see all his best angles ;) This is my new all time favorite capture of him to date!!!
